THE INTERNATIONAL BUDO FEDERATION/SCOTTISH SOMBO FEDERATION SCOTTISH OPEN INTERNATIONAL JUDO AND SOMBO WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 28th JULY DUMFRIES
The annual Scottish Open Judo and Sombo Wrestling Championships were held at the Dumfries Icebowl at the weekend organized by I.B.F. Scotland President Robin Hyslop 4th Dan.
The number of entries was expected to be less this year due to the Multinations also being held in Dumfries earlier in May. Not so! On Saturday morning when the doors opened at the Icebowl the competitors just kept turning up, over 160 to be precise, the countries that fighters came from were Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Egypt and the UK. Usually the deadline to book in is 10 days before the competition but this year Robin decided to allow bookings on the day. Two mat areas were just enough to see the competition right through till 4.00 pm.
Local club Closeburn Judo/Sombo club took their fair share of the medals starting with 8 year old Charlotte Medley taking the gold in her weight group. Charlotte had to deal with a player who was far heavier in the final, 10 kilos of difference! Although only 8 years old her technical ability won her the fight with a straight full point win and a round of applause from the crowd. Boys under 23 kilo Donald Matheson fought well to get to the final and take the gold medal on a hold down. The Donald brothers Luke and Lewis both also fought well and another 2 gold medals, very determined judo players. Jodie Gibson a well seasoned and popular junior Judo player took the Gold in her category, her brothers Andrew and Christopher had to work hard as they had a huge amount of players in their weight groups, Andrew coming away with the Silver and Christopher getting the Bronze. Hanna Brown who has been training at Closeburn for just under a year took the silver medal in her weight group. 8 medals in total for Closeburn junior Judo.
The senior players were good to watch as there were many international players on the mat. Closeburn player John Sharpe took the bronze in his category and Jack Tinning loosing in the final to Scotland’s number one player John McDonald taking the Silver medal.
The Sombo Wrestling was kept till the afternoon and local newcomers Lee Gray and Mark Rogerson fought in different categories which had international champions in them. Lee and Mark both managed to get to the quarter finals and had some really good fights, both names to watch out for in the future. Jack Tinning also made it to the quarter final losing to Johannes Alder, both Jack and Johannes were British squad players for the World championships In Siberia in 2001, in the final Johannes met 8 times British Champion John Clarke, this was to be the match of the day as Johannes was also 3 times British champion and both players were in the same weight group this time, the 2 top Sombo players in the UK! the fights were 6 minutes long and 5 minutes into the fight Johannes came under John and turned him onto his back for a 4 point score then Johannes went straight in for an armlock which won Johannes the fight, an excellent display of sportsmanship from both players won them a huge round of applause from the crowd, Other local Sombo player from Castle-Douglas Luke Struthers took the Bronze medal, Luke was a member of the British team that fought in Siberia in 2001 and is the coach at the Castle-Douglas Judo club who train on Wednesday nights.
In the men’s Judo 82 kilo final Amro Doray from Egypt lost to Danny Carrot from Folkestone with Johannes Alder taking the Bronze.
