French Storm British Open Sombo Championships
Saturday March 24th was the date for the British Open Sombo Championships the event was held as per usual at the Swallows Leisure Centre Sittingbourne. At long last the bleacher seating is being renewed, making this a comfortable venue where now all spectators can watch. This years event was way down on competitors especially in the under 12 year age group, so much so the organiser will not be including that age group in next years competition and the Ladies section was absolute disaster with just two entries on the plus side the Senior Men’s event was extremely well supported and of a very high standard. Maybe because sombo wrestling is one of the toughest grappling sports it will only attract tough men for a spectators point of view this a good thing because they can witness some real Gladiators in action, we know some Judoka and amateurs wrestlers are frightened off because Sombo allows leg locks but these people should take note of the Sittingbourne Warriors Grappling Academy as their members take part in Judo, Sombo, Kurash, Free style Wrestling, Jacket Submission wrestling and Belt wrestling and win medals in all of them as each compliments they other. Part of the reason for the drop in numbers was one the change to a Saturday from a Sunday this did not go down well with the Brits, two the week before the Dutch held a big Open Sombo event and the week before there was the EU Sombo Closed in Latvia (for some reason the UK was not invited) although we had nationals from Uzbekistan, Poland, Russia, USA, England, Scotland, Armenia some were here shall we say were here dubiously yet when a formal application is put in by a genuine Sports organisation they are refused visa’s every year this happens this year a full team from Mongolia was refused entry. This government has lost total control of illegal immigration and tries to rectify their mistake s by penalise genuine sportsman, I expect this will happens for a years more until they are voted out of power. So next years British Open will be held in June on a Sunday.
A French team from BEAUSOLEIL FRANCE came with many players and went away with 3 bronzes, 2 silvers and 1 gold Player/Coach ROMOULD LEGROS was very happy with his result, this is his third trip to the British Open and has won medals at every event, his French Team will be attending Martin Clarke’s Annual Summer Camp held in Dibgate ACF camp in Folkestone in August. The Sittingbourne Warriors headed the medal tally as expected but all our Gold medallist had some hard fights, the Warriors are twinning with France and hope to travel to them later on in the year.
