World Sambo & Combat Sambo Championships Thessalonica Greece November 6th, 7th, 8th 2009 DailyMotion BritishSombo Youtube British Sombo Photo's More Photo's This year GB only sent two players and one official, unlike other countries we receive no government aid and in a major recession it would be immoral to receive government money, there are lot more important things to pay. Yet interesting enough the French brought a team of 25 and the Venezuelans a team of 15 paid for by their respective government but then their economies are in a much healthy state then GB. The team was Danny Carrott u82k, Ian Parker u68k and Martin Clarke British Sombo Federation President. The first to fight on day 2 was Ian Parker Woodside Grappling Club Bedford in his first International Sambo match, his first and only fight was against a very experienced Georgian who eventually arm locked him but he did get some Inner Thigh attacks in a competent performance. This was 22 year old Danny’s 3rd World Championships and each occasion he pulls one of the top three in the first fight, this time it was the eventual winner a Russian. Although Danny lost 10pt to nil it was his best performance to date on several occasions he tilted his opponent on one occasion I think he deserved a point, he was the only one to take the Russian to the distance throughout the whole competition. His Bronze medal fight against a Frenchman was a bit of a disappointment when he lost but Danny has been injury prone this years and the fight against the Russian drained him to much but at 22 he has a lot more to give. Danny lives in Folkestone but trains and fights for the Warriors Grappling Academy in Sittingbourne. Martin Clarke attended in his position as BSF President and attended the World Congress where he voiced his opinion on several items on the agenda. The Federation International Amateur Sambo now has 90 member countries 56 delegates were present at the Congress, a far distance from when the Federation was formed in 1985 when Martin first got involved, and then there was just 18 countries. Martin has presented Medals at the World Masters but this time he had the honour of being asked to present medals in the World Combat Sambo Championships. Martin teaches CombatSombo and Pancration on a Thursday night at 7.30pm. He is due to have a replacement Hip in January so in March he will be starting a Sombo Wrestling Class for juniors 7pm and Seniors 8pm every Wednesday at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne, at present Sombo and Judo are taught together on a Tuesday but because the rules of judo have changed so much becoming more restrictive this no long possible. So with Sombo being more physically demanding and doing a lot of techniques not valid in Judo we will create a separate class. It will be the first Class in GB that has a separate Junior Sombo Club.
